Making time for the important people in our personal life helps us feel more connected and supported. And strong personal connections is a one way ticket to a happier life.  

7 Strategies for Achieving Work-Life Balance in Recruitment


Now that we understand the importance of work-life balance, let's explore some strategies for achieving it.

1. Set boundaries

Setting clear boundaries between work hours and personal hours is key. Make sure your colleagues and your family and friends know too so that boundaries can be respected and expectations can be managed.  This will help you to switch off from work and enjoy personal time without any stress or guilt. As a recruiter, you may at times need to dip into personal time to call a client or candidate, so make sure you take the extra time to refresh and recharge.

2. Create a schedule and stick to it

To avoid overcommitting yourself, you could create a schedule with time set aside for work, personal activities, and rest. 

Ensure you have dedicated time for the things you love, such as hobbies, fitness, connecting with friends and family.  If you spend all your free time laying on the couch watching Netflix, you may come back to work feeling unfulfilled and lacking energy. 

3. Take breaks

Studies have shown that taking breaks can improve productivity and focus. If a task is making you feel overwhelmed or stressed, take a walk, have a cup of tea, or just step away from your desk for a while. This will help clear your head and give you a fresh perspective.

4. Exercise & sleep

Rest and exercise are two things that many people often skip when the pressure from work is on. However, both can do wonders to improve your mental clarity and focus. 

5. Unplug from technology

As a recruiter, you probably spend most of your time in front of a screen and on the phone.  So, when the work day is over, the last thing you should be doing is continuing to stare at your screen, which is most likely your phone. Unplug and get away from it all, even if just for a short time. By completely disconnecting from technology you can find the time and space to completely relax and enjoy your personal time. 

6. Prioritise self-care

Think about what helps you to relax and recharge. And do more of it! 

It could be exercising, spending time with friends, taking your dog for a walk, people watching in coffee shops, cooking, or meditating. The list goes on. Make self care a part of your daily routine. 

7. Learn to say no

Whether your professional or personal life, sometimes you just need to say no. It’s important not to overcommit yourself and take on tasks that you do not have capacity for. Look at your work diary and ensure you have enough breaks between meetings so that you can avoid a mental overload. Look at your personal diary and ensure you have down time between your social gatherings.

By setting boundaries, creating a schedule, taking breaks, getting adequate exercise and sleep, unplugging from technology, prioritising self-care, and learning to say no, we can create a fulfilling life that includes both work and personal time.
